The rate after the intro period

Teaser pricing is designed to expire. A plan advertised at a very low rate often converts to a variable one after a month or two, and variable is where the damage happens.

Monthly recurring charges

A flat fee of five to ten dollars, occasionally thirty, attached to a lower headline rate. On a modest household it can wipe out the saving entirely. Always compare the all-in cost.

Cancellation terms

Normal, and not a problem on shorter plans. It matters on twenty-four and thirty-six month terms, where being locked out of a falling market is a real cost.

What it is measured against

A rate only means something next to your utility's current default. That number is published, and it is the only fair benchmark.
